24. gazelle
25. trekking
26. bizarre
27. reminisce
28. anxious
29. tsunami
30. sapphire

The final 10 words of the Quiz are uncommon.

How did you find them? There are some really challenging words here!

Were you surprised by your results?

Most people who finish the spelling quiz

struggle with the words 'zucchini' and 'sapphire'.

How about you?

The challenging part of 'sapphire' is the 'pph'. The challenging part of zucchini is the 'cch'. Neither spelling pattern is very common. So it's not surprising people tend to misspell these words. However, the 'cch' and 'pph' are not unlike the 'rrh' in 'hemorrhage' and the 'ddh' in 'Buddha. Once you learn to spell any one of these words correctly, and are made aware of the pattern they all share, you'll find it much easier to spell these words and words like them.

If you got either one of these words wrong (or even if you didn't),

I'd like you to try the following ...

Choose a word you'd like to practice and do steps 1 to 4 ...

  1. Name each of the letters out loud (Pause between the 'h' and the 'i'):   s a p p h   i r e   or    z u c c h    i n i
  2. Now name them again, in the same way, but without reading them; close your eyes or look away
  3. Now, name them again, and again, and again (without reading), to a steady beat
  4. Now, repeat STEP 3, but each time you say the letters say them a little faster

How does that feel?

You could write your word correctly with confidence now, couldn't you!

You're already a great speller! But there is a simple step you can take to improve your spelling even further.

Use Spell Check as a free personal coach! Whenever Spell Check highlights a word, try to correct it yourself instead of considering the options given. Better yet, use Spell Check and Grammarly! Grammarly is a free program you can also use as a personal coach - downloaded it from here.
